Liquefied Natural Gas or LNG is natural gas (mainly methane and ethane) compressed at moderate pressure but cooled to -161°C (-258°F) to remain liquid. The advantage of LNG is that its volume is 1/600th of its gaseous volume which makes it very attractive for transportation. In the liquefaction process there are several steps involved where compression of the natural gas is required (e.g. refrigeration system, boil-off gas).
